As an educator in a co-taught inclusion classroom, you are faced with the rewarding but sometimes challenging task of creating a supportive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students. Effective classroom management is key to ensuring a positive and inclusive experience for everyone involved. In this article we’ll share three tips to enhance classroom management in a co-taught inclusion setting.

Establish a Clear Classroom Management Plan Prior to the Start of School

A classroom management plan is a proactive approach to maintain an organized, respectful, and engaging learning environment, particularly crucial in a co-taught inclusion classroom.

Find time before the school year starts to create a comprehensive classroom management plan with your co-teacher. If your school has a behavior plan already in place be sure to follow that plan to establish consistency. If there is not a school wide behavior plan, be sure to outline behavioral expectations, consequences, and rewards. Since it is an inclusion classroom, it will be important to identify specific strategies to address diverse learning needs and potential challenges that may arise in an inclusive setting. The expertise that the special education teacher has can be used here if you are unsure of how to approach these needs.

You want to be sure to share this plan with students at the beginning of the school year. It is important that you reinforce these expectations from day one.

Teach Classroom Procedures and Instructional Routines

Clearly defined procedures and routines promote a structured learning atmosphere, helping students understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from the learning process.

Break down essential procedures and routines into small, manageable steps, modeling each one with your co-teacher’s support. Practice these routines consistently,

reinforcing positive behavior and providing corrective feedback when needed. Involve students in role-playing exercises to internalize the routines and ensure a smooth flow in the co-taught classroom.

Differentiate Instruction

Differentiating instruction caters to the unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles of all students, fostering an inclusive environment where every individual can thrive.

Collaborate with your co-teacher to assess students’ diverse needs and abilities. Create flexible lesson plans that incorporate varied instructional strategies, materials, and assessments. Group students strategically, considering their skill levels and learning profiles, to provide targeted support and challenge. This is also where building relationships with your student will help you. When you have a relationship with your students you are able to understand how they learn more effectively. Be sure to regularly monitor students’ progress and adjust instructional approaches accordingly.
